Gábor Juhász, researcher at the HUN-REN Biological Research Centre in Szeged and at the Department of Anatomy, Cell and Developmental Biology at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), has been elected a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO). Election to the EMBO Membership is a lifelong honour that recognizes internationally acknowledged scientific excellence and outstanding achievements in the life sciences.
This year, sixty new members and nine associate members from twenty-four countries have been elected to EMBO. The organization, which brings together over 2,100 leading researchers, aims to support outstanding scientists working in the life sciences, promote the exchange of scientific knowledge, and contribute to the development of a research environment in which scientists can achieve their best work.
„We are honoured to welcome this remarkable group of scientists to the EMBO Membership. - said Fiona Watt, EMBO Director, regarding the new elections. - Their ideas and contributions will enrich the organization and help advance the life sciences internationally.”
Gábor Juhász is a geneticist and cell biologist. After completing his studies in Hungary, he spent time in the United States conducting research on the genetics and molecular biology of Drosophila (fruit fly). In 2009, he was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Trust grant, which enabled him to establish a research group at ELTE. In 2015, he moved to the Biological Research Centre in Szeged, funded by a “Momentum” research grant, where he currently works full-time, while maintaining active ties with the Faculty of Science at ELTE.
His research extends beyond understanding autophagic-lysosomal degradation pathways in Drosophila, with the hope that his group’s findings may contribute in the future to a better understanding and treatment of serious diseases such as Alzheimer’s. His work is internationally recognized — a fact exemplified by his recent election to EMBO Membership.
The prestige of the organization is reflected in the fact that 92 of its current and former members are Nobel Laureates. Since its founding, EMBO members have had a significant influence on the direction of life sciences and have contributed to strengthening scientific communities. The newly elected members will be formally welcomed at the upcoming EMBO Members' Meeting in Heidelberg, Germany, from 22 to 24 October 2025.
Congratulations to the EMBO membership!
