The Straub Days event of the HUN-REN Biological Research Center, Szeged was opened by Director General, Ferenc Nagy on the morning of May 20. The two-day event ended with a banquet on the evening of May 21.
During the first day, within the framework of a series of scientific talks, the four institutes of the HUN-REN BRC reported on their recent outstanding achievements in a series of 3 lectures each
On the morning of the second day, after the evaluation of the year 2024 by the Director General and the Chief Financial Officer, the prizes and distinctions awarded by the HUN-REN BRC were distributed. The most prestigious award of the HUN-REN BRC – proposed by the academicians of the BRC – is the Straub Plaque, which is awarded annually. In 2025, this was awarded to Bálint Kintses, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Biochemistry, in recognition of his outstandingly high-quality scientific activity.
he HUN-REN BRC also annually awards the “Qualitas Biologica” prize in the categories of “Best Scientific Papers” and “Best Ph.D. Dissertations”. Out of the 13 and 14 submitted entries, the Foundation’s board of trustees awarded the best paper category prize to Mihály Koncz and the best dissertation category prize to Pál Albert, mentored by Antal Kiss.

The highlight of the Straub Days was the festive lecture series organized on the occasion of Pál Venetianer’s 90th birthday. After Ferenc Nagy’s welcoming remarks, the first commemorative speech was given by Nobel Prize winner Katalin Karikó under the title “Mr. Venetianer is my role model”.
Afterwards, Pál Venetianer’s colleagues, first and second generation students gave commemorative lectures. The mini-symposium was closed with words of thanks from Pál Venetianer.
