The Straub Young Scientist Prize was awarded to the outstanding PhD student of the Biological Research Center for the third time this year.

The Straub Young Scientist Prize was established in 2017 by the Director General of the Biological Research Center (BRC) to reward the outstanding young scientists working for their PhD degree under the mentorship of research fellows of the BRC. The prize which was issued this year for the third time, provides 100 thousand HUF monthly supplement to the PhD fellowship for a period of one year.

This year 6 PhD students were awarded from the 32 applicants:

Kincses, András, Institute of Biophysics, mentor: Dér, András
Henry, Surya, Institute of Genetics, mentor: Pirity, Melinda
Szabó, Anikó, Institute of Biochemistry, mentor: Boros, Imre and Henn, László
Szili, Petra, Institute of Biochemistry, mentor: Pál, Csaba
Tasnádi, Ervin, Institute of Biochemistry, mentor: Horváth, Péter
Zsibrita, Nikolett, Institute of Biochemistry, mentor: Kiss, Antal

The prize rewards young scientists performing documented excellent scientific work in the BRC. The condition of the application is one completed year in the course to get the degree, i.e. fellows in their 2-4 year of their studies can apply, furthermore, those fellows are also eligible, who have finished their 4th year (or the 3rd year in the “old system”), and initiated the official process to get the degree.

The prize can be deserved through an application system. The fellows can apply with their own research results obtained from their doctoral research studies. The selection procedure consists of two parts: a written application and an oral presentation. The written application contains the concept of the research, the obtained results and the future aims, in English. The jury, based on the evaluation of the written applications, invites the worthy applicant for an oral presentation and discussion also in English. The aim of the oral part of the procedure is to evaluate the applicant’s knowledge and lecture skill. The jury operates with equal participation of the scientists from the 4 institutes of the BRC. The decision of the jury is independent of the field, it is solely based on scientific excellence.

On behalf of the leadership of the Biological Research Center, we congratulate to the winners for the high quality applications and the excellent presentations, and we wish every success in their scientific work and doctoral study.
